I recently did my first professional shoot for a local cafe in my home city of Edinburgh. The Purple Pig Cafe in the city’s Tollcross area is owned and run by the lovely Laura and her brother Jason. These guys really love and understand good food. Everything they serve is made on the premises by them and cooked to order. Fresh, excellent produce, lavish cakes, and wonderful Scottish specialities (smoked salmon, black pudding) vie for space on the a menu which also features classics such as traditional Mac & Cheese and fresh-daily vegetable soups.
The breakfast choices come up top of my list (but then, breakfast is my favourite meal of the day) with choices such as pancakes with berry compote, porridge with fresh fruit and honey and the phenomenal Breakfast Stack – a tower of black pudding, bacon, scrambled egg, tomato and portobello mushroom on an English muffin:
Up next were the lunch items: a homemade butternut squash soup, the gloriously golden Mac & Cheese, homemade quiche, falafel and greek salad and – the winner by far for me – the American bagel: stuffed with pastrami, pickles and cheese:
And of course, the CAKES. From plump fruit scones to mini-Oreo topped cupcakes, huge slices of rocky road and caramel shortcake and the mother of all carrot cakes:
I was given a box of cakes to take home with me and I didn’t get to taste any of them because The Boss – who has a serious sweet tooth – beat me to it! He was very happy with his box of treats.
The cafe doesn’t have a website yet but you can find them on Facebook at https://www.facebook.com/pages/The-Purple-Pig-Cafe/308193735943885
All the best Laura & Jason! xx
